Why a Lump of Coal?
The earliest history of presents or coal left in stockings is about Saint Nicholas, a 4th-century Christian saint, and the first version of Santa Claus. He left coins in children's shoes and socks that were left where he could find them. In 13th-century Italy, Le Befana left presents or coal in stockings by the fireplace as she searched for the baby Jesus. In 16th-century Holland, children put their wooden shoes by the fireplace and received either a toy, candy, cookies, or a lump of coal from Sinterklaas. In Turkey, a father of three daughters couldn't afford the dowry required for them to marry. So Santa Claus dropped bags of gold down the chimney, and the bags ended up in the daughters' stockings that hung by the fire to dry. Krampus came bearing lumps of coal in Austria, Croatia, and Hungary. Many of these gift-bearers entered the house through the chimney, so grabbing a lump of coal for naughty children from the coal bucket by the fireplace was easy. What is the Origin of Santa's Naughty List Santa's naughty and nice list is a more recent addition to the story of Santa Claus. In 1934, J. Fred Coots and Haven Gillespie wrote the song "Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town." It was recorded by banjoist Harry Reser and his band and introduced on the Eddie Cantor radio show in 1934. This song was the first mention of Santa Claus's naughty and nice list. The lyrics in the second verse are: "He's making a list, He's checking it twice, He's gonna find out who's naughty or nice Santa Claus is coming to town." So, even though before 1934, children might have received a lump of coal, Santa didn't have an official naughty or nice list. Have a Santa's Naughty List Party 1.
