Why We Love Christmas Traditions

Elizabeth and Marilyn Roy

When we were young, we listened to read-along, long-playing records about Christmas traditions telling the story of La Befana and other Christmas legends.  We also decorated the front windows with our sets of Christmas-themed decals. The Christmas greetings, "Merry Christmas," "Feliz Navidad," and "Joyeux Noel" were among those decals. The records, decals, and the story of Santa Lucia led us to explore the Christmas celebrations of other countries.

Elizabeth developed a passion for Christmas angels after reading an article about the Nuremberg Angel around 1963 or 1964 in American Girl magazine, the Girl Scouts' official magazine. She developed a passion for nutcrackers from the ballet, The Nutcracker.

Our mother inherited her grandparent's Christmas decorations. So, we were exposed to clip-on glass birds, other glass ornaments, bubble lights, novelty candles, and snow babies. Many of the ornaments were too thin to use, so we sought reproductions when they were available.

We'll cover all of these Christmas traditions. We'll write about the history and traditions of the holidays and share party and decorating ideas. We'll also provide events around the country. So we hope you enjoy our Christmas series and our other holiday arrticles throughout the year.

Marilyn and Elizabeth both enjoy celebrating Halloween. As adults, they dressed in costumes to pass out candy. Elizabeth worked with their mother to make  a witches costume for a Marilyn, and Elizabeth made a prairie dress that turned into a fairy princess costume with the tiara Marilyn crocheted over a wire form that she shaped.
